I enjoyed the Tarra Patrick interview in Sex 74, which had some good questions and interesting answers:

• - What does your partner think of you working in porn?
  - Are there any particularly difficult moments in porn?
  - What do you think of porn made by women?
  - Do you enjoy sex as much personally as you seem to enjoy it in the movies?
  - Have you ever encountered problems being a porn star?
  - What is the secret of your success?

The interview had a big flaw, though: obviously Tarra was answering a prepared catalogue of questions without having a counterpart who would have been able to react directly on her answers. A good interviewer goes into his colloquist; the result is a vivid and credible interview. That's missing here.

Maybe you know the book "XXX - 30 porn star portraits" by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders (Ed.) - if not, go and buy that book. It features several essays, interviews and porn star portraits (including very fine portrait photos), and especially Nancy Friday's talk with porn legend Nina Hartley is outstanding. I have to retranslate into English, as I have a German version of this book; some of the questions are:

• - Do you consider your porn actor job part of your life or are you like Superman? Do you slip into - or take off - your costume and after that you return into your 'normal' life?
  - Please explain this to me: a long time go, you were a little girl and characterized by your parent's perception of your body and their attitude towards you showing your body now. How did they react on your need to show your body? Did they know at all? [The original question in the book only mentions her mother.]
  - Do you have brothers and sisters? What do they think about your porn career? What about your circle of friends and acquaintances?
  - [After discussing sources of their sexual ideas:] I often hear the quotation: 'I thought I was the only one.' Do you hear comparable things in relation to your job?
  - Sometimes I think, if there was a symbol for what you're doing, it would be an eye. The look. You have to feel the look of the people at you.
  - Do you perceive the look of women and men differently? Do you think they benefit differently from what they see?
  - [After discussing the role of feminism and morale:] What do you think, does the majority of women think about the penis?
  - Do you observe yourself when you're performing?
  - Now a question about the voyeuristic look of the audience: does this arouse you? They're sitting there, eyes on you, and you're be watched. To be seen is very important for us, to be invisible drives us crazy. So you're seen in the most intimate, sexual, important way that a woman can be seen. How does that feel?
  - Do you have a climax when performing or are you too aware of the audiences' presence? Or does this presence boost your orgasm?
  - What about your fantasies? What turns you on still, after all that public exhibition?
  - Are there forbidden things in your sexual fantasies?
  - Is there an intermixture of your professional with your private life?

I remember that in former times the more 'serious' porn magazines always tried to make porn a 'normal' thing and to remove the taboos from porn. I think if the industry treats their actors like real people and digs a bit deeper than the usual 'how did you become a porn star', 'do you like anal', 'how was your first DP'-blurb, there could be a slight chance that porn gets noticed by other people but only us die-hard fans. Just a suggestion. I would really like to know more about these people, at least more than just watching their performance. A good interview would be the key.
